the enema

Last Friday, I had to work with the same patient I had the day before. He had been feeling impacted for days and had received an enema on that Thursday. He was prescribed enemas as needed and needed one that day.

The nurse had me perform the task, so I gave the guy an enema. It wasn’t difficult at all. The enema kit was just a bottle of solution with a tip no longer than a couple inches that just needed to be lubed up, inserted and squeezed.

This patient was also a dead weight meaning that he couldn’t support himself standing without a walker or assistance from someone. He had to be transported from the chair to the bed to the commode then from the commode back to the bed which required some physical endurance with me a couple technicians.

He also needed a stool specimen collected for lab testing, so I had to take a piece of one of his turds with a sterile tongue depressor and put it in a specimen jar. Then, I had to walk that specimen to the lab in a biohazard bag which I found amusing ’cause I was walking around the hospital with a turd in a jar in a bag.

Users can hear each voices but not much else on telephones. Why continue to use outdated technology when the wave of the future has arrived? If a business meeting is scheduled and those who need to attend can’t be present physically, then video conferencing is the answer. They can be heard as well as seen, and the company even saves travel expenses.
