Tonight, Mare and I enjoyed yet another very cost-effective meal.
The Pita Pizza
First, the run-down on food cost for this meal for two:
- 1 5-piece (12-ounce) bag of pita bread – $1.50
- ~1 cup of marinara – compliments of a pizza place (For this cause, we’ll say $1.)
- 1 8-ounce bag of fancy-shredded mozzarella cheese – $1.85
- 1 8-ounce can of mushroom stems and pieces – $1.29
- ~2 tablespoons pesto sauce – leftover (For this cause, we’ll say 50¢.)
- Parmesan cheese – already had (You can save your cheese packets from that overpriced pizza you’re fond of. This is an optional ingredient but necessary for the pesto pizza.)
- ~2 ounces of fresh spinach (For this cause, we’ll say 25¢. The 9-ounce bag cost $1.50.)
- 5 chopped cloves of garlic (A entire bulb costs a quarter. We’ll add the entire price of the bulb for the sake of this post.)
- 1 Roma tomato cut into slices (The one Mare purchased cost 28¢.)
- Cost of energy – (This can’t be determined. For this cause, we’ll say $3 which is an exaggeration if you look at a $150 electric costing you an average of $5 for an entire day.)
Total cost of food and energy: $9.92
- These food items are not taxed at the grocery store, and the energy cost was overestimated. The marinara was free, and the pesto was leftover from another recipe.
We’re looking at a meal for two for right under $10. Your time should only cost you the delicious meal you’re about to have.
Prep time: About 20 minutes
The steps are easy. I’m sure you can figure them out yourself, but here you go.
- Prep the oven to 450°F.
- Take a couple baking sheets and set the pitas on them.
- Spread the marinara on four of the pitas.
- Spread the pesto on the fifth one.
- Organize the spinach evenly on the pitas with marinara.
- Organize the tomato slices evenly on the pita with pesto.
- Generously sprinkle Parmesan on the tomato slices. This will help prevent the pita from getting soggy.
- Cover all of the pitas with mozzarella cheese. Save about a handful of the cheese for the end.
- Put all of the mushrooms on the pitas with marinara.
- Put the chopped garlic on all of the pitas.
- Sprinkle some Parmesan on all of the pitas to help eat up some of the grease while they bake. Sprinkle the rest of the mozzarella on all of the pitas. This will work as a “glue” to keep the toppings together.
- Bake the pitas for about 9 minutes.
- After 9 minutes, make sure the cheese is melted evenly and should have darker edges. If not, let the pitas bake for another minute.
- Remove the baking sheets and allow them to cool off for about five minutes before slicing and enjoying.
We are living the future now. Twenty years ago, ideas were only on paper but now they have become a reality. The settings can be customized on digital frames, so the user can enjoy multiple pictures with music and even video clips. The framed photograph is certainly becoming old school, and now is the time to keep up with the times by having a digital picture frame versus all those frames cluttering your desk.
