the tired and uninspired

[ [ [ Countdown to 3hirty Posts in April: THREE! ] ] ]

April has come and gone.

I’m hoping that May is more productive in my realm of creativity. I would like to do more writing that doesn’t involve spending more time on what you’re reading here than I should. Then again, I offered up the thirty-post challenge that I surely can’t allow to defeat me.

I’m hoping to be in the process of churning out something involving comics next month or at least be very close to making something happen. I also have a small video-like project that will be put together next month that you should be seeing posting here.

I’d also like to get caught up on my comic-reading, but it seems like I buy more than I should and create a huge backlog that will take me a very long time to work through. It’s the collector in me.

I haven’t been watching a whole lot of movies lately. Sleepytime involves putting on some classic cartoons and fading out to them. They bring back memories of my childhood. I thought I’d never get to see some of them, but fortunately the dollar DVD industry has picked them up and released a bunch of them.

Rock Band would definitely consume my time if it was here at the apartment.

Mare had a test that went on ’til 9PM, and Neil and the gang went to a Spurs game. Pluckers was canceled this week. I hope it resumes next week. We had that terrible waiter last time. He was so bad that I wrote a review about it (see: the pluckin’ good time 4/15). I also had the nerve to fill out their comment card online and refer the post to them. Surprisingly, the general manager of the location we went to responded and also hooked me up with a gift card. Bonus!

Work is going well. Our mainframe was upgraded and going faster than ever. This is helping production and making my job much easier. We also got a new director of operations, and he’s a cool guy. He listens and offers solutions. Our last boss seemed like he was going along for the ride and only lasted something like six months. Then again, that particular position seems to have a tremendous turnaround considering that it’s had the most people fill in the place since I’ve been there and it’ll only be two years this July.

I’ve done my rant for the night. Today’s the last day of the month. I have two posts left to go. Peace out.

the first day of the work week

The weekend came and went way too fast as usual. I surprisingly feel asleep real early on Saturday and didn’t wake up ’til Sunday. Sunday flew by, and Monday is mostly spent.

The work week begins. The first day is over. Four more to go.

This week will be interesting in the middle. On Wednesday, Thrice will be playing Stubb’s. I’m cashing in two hours of PTO to get to the show on time, since the doors open at 5:30PM. This means the show starts at 6:30PM. By the time I normally get out of work and make it to Stubb’s, Thrice will have already taken the stage.

I will enjoy myself that evening, because I’ve been looking forward to this show. Unfortunately, I will have to wake up waaay too early for my own good the next morning. I have my weekly vendor meeting that I have to attend with my boss where we chat with the vendor the same exact thing we can communicate through email. I guess it’s supposed to be some rapport-building experience, but I absolutely loathe it.

That day will be interesting. I will go to work at eight as opposed to nine. I will get out at 12PM, and I will be using four hours of PTO to make it to jury duty at 1:30PM and waste my time doing that for who knows how long. Then the gods will forgive me and make the next day Friday which will lead us into the weekend once again.

I’m not looking forward to Thursday, but fortunately, it’s the only day this week that looks grim.

the three-day celebration

I had the idea that my boss had canceled weekly meeting I have with him and one of our vendors every Thursday at nine in the morning. He had actually canceled the meeting for next week, because he was going to be in London.

I didn’t realize this, until I went to work at my normal time today, and Outlook gave me the message that my meeting was three hours overdue. The vendor was emailing wondering why didn’t have the meeting, but my boss replied saying that he couldn’t be there. Lucky me. I was off the hook with that one. I seriously thought he had canceled the one today and figured this would be one of my best weeks ever.

Actually, it kind of is. Work has not been stressful at all. I feel like I was so underworked this week that I’d stay up way too late punching away on the keyboard. I definitely didn’t get enough sleep a couple nights this week, and it made me dog tired the next day. I couldn’t even get myself out of bed this morning. I woke up at eight this morning with the intention of going in at nine anyway, but I couldn’t shake the sleep out of me. I went back to bed for a few more hours and went in at twelve.

Tomorrow is my birthday. I gave myself a present by cashing in eight hours of my hard-earned PTO to not go to work. I don’t have much to do tomorrow anyway, so it should be fine. I know for sure that I’ll be sleeping in. I also know that it’s payday, and I will be visit Mini’s to get a long overdue haircut. I seem to do that often… neglect getting my hair cut. I guess it goes with the fact that I don’t like to shave.

I don’t know what else I’m going to do during the day. Maybe I’ll have some time to catch up on my comic-reading. Speaking of which, K$ and I are getting back into the comic-creating, so my crappy art and his marvelous writing will see the light again! That’s all I’m going to say about that until our project comes to fruition.

Last night, Mare & I watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. I enjoyed it. I enjoy pretty much everything that Judd Apatow has something to do with.

Mare is currently baking my birthday cake. My weekend birthday celebration has been planned a little something like this:

  • Friday night: Trudy’s for my free Mexican martini
  • Saturday evening: Barbecue at Neil’s, plenty of friends, burgers, bratwurst, and a keg of beer
  • Sunday: Salt Lick in Driftwood for more barbecue!

YES!! It’s all gonna r0ck!

I don’t usually celebrate my birthday, but I guess it was about time I did for once. Plus, Neil hasn’t had a party at his house yet and now is the time. We’ll be grilling on his new grill and having a good time. I hope most of the people that were invited show up, so we can all have fun.

the sound of typing in the dark

Today, I woke up this morning and it felt like Saturday. It also felt like it was about 11 in the morning, and I was telling myself that I had to meet my mother in a few hours.

Then I realized that it was Friday, and that it was about a quarter ’til 11. I had almost the right time, but I definitely had the wrong day. Being a Friday, I knew that I was going to have to be at work in an hour. Grumble.

Fortunately, it was Friday.

Friday’s usually come off as a lazy day. I stayed busy most of the day, and it went by fast enough for me. The weather was also wonderful. Today was cool (almost cold) and windy. The air felt fresh.

Usually, my workmates and I figure something to do after they get out of work for the night. Having the super awesome schedule I have, I’m off a few hours earlier than they are. Last week, they had made plans earlier in the week to go to a restaurant we really don’t frequent. I had made plans with Mare to go to Trudy’s.

My brother, Dirty Fingers, K$, Mare, and I all went to Trudy’s around 9:30 for dinner and drinks. I figured we’d meet up with my workmates after Trudy’s ’cause this other place is overpriced and their food isn’t as good. That’s what we attempted to do. We went to the other place, and they weren’t there. I called one of them up, and as it turns out, they decided to go to Trudy’s instead of this place, because one of the guy’s roommates was bringing someone they didn’t like too much and wanted to avoid any possible drama.

Seriously though, that was some PBS (punk *itch *hit). A few of the people in this group are in their early thirties, and they still play those high school games. In the workmate group was three people. Two more would join counting the roommate and his workmate. Then add the five of us and that would make ten. Wouldn’t you figure that with a group of ten that you can avoid one of those people for most of if not the whole night? Then again, I didn’t give them the guarantee that I was going to meet up with them nor did they know we were going to be a party of five (ha!).

Anyway, what I’m saying is that I thought it was extra lame of them to change their plans even though they were really looking forward to it all due to one person.

After getting the news that they went to where we just came from, we went down to the Crown and enjoyed each other’s company which actually turned out to be a great night. On our way back to the car from the other restaurant, the roommate called me. I figured that he had spotted us, but we were already disappointed. I ignored the call, and we just left to go where everybody knows your name.

I’m rehashing what happened a week ago, because today won’t be like that. The guy from work who usually tries to round us up to hang out got denied by all of us. I wasn’t down ’cause of what happened the week before plus my bro’s out of town and because I don’t feel like spending mad cash on alcohol today. I don’t know where I want to go out for dinner tonight. Maybe Kerbey Lane? I don’t know. I’ll have to think about it.

Peace out.

the x-men vs. iron man

I’m looking forward to the new Iron Man movie coming out in less than a month. Here’s some art that was discovered at work. Brilliant I say.

I’m keeping this one short and sweet, because it’s my early bedtime. I’m pulling the 9 to 5 tomorrow. I don’t have much to update on, except Mare made an amazing soup with chicken, mushrooms, and bacon.

Two more days to go until the weekend returns. As usual, I am looking forward to it.

the 3hirty (aka the april post challenge)

Similar to what I did in February, I am challenging myself to do the same for the month of April. Will this be a bimonthly challenge? I don’t know but by the looks of it, quite possibly.

I have another post that I will be writing tonight, and this will be the April kick-off post.

What’s going on this month?

I turn another year not this Friday but next.

Uncle Sam & friends get to keep the piece of what they borrowed from my paycheck and hopefully I’ll get some of it back. These past few years haven’t been too nice to me in regards to tax returns.

My mother’s birthday is this month. To be exact, it’s on Earth Day.

That same day, Sleepercar’s debut album, West Texas, will officially be released. I’ve gotten the chance to listen to it already, and I enjoy it. I hope they return to Austin soon, because I will definitely attend.

The following day, Thrice will be rocking out Stubb’s. I’m excited about this show. I really hope that they play To Awake and Avenge the Dead, but that may be unlikely with the direction they’ve taken their music. I can hope though, right?

Thrice: If you somehow found yourself reading this, please play To Awake and Avenge the Dead at your Austin show in April. We miss that song, and we were disappointed when you didn’t play it at your last show. NOFX played The Decline in its entirety, and I never thought I’d get to witness that live. Is playing one of your most loved songs by some of your most loyal fans too hard to fulfill?

I know you have to promote The Alchemy Index, but To Awake… doesn’t even clock in at three minutes so I’m sure it’ll leave plenty of space to play all those songs. I probably sound like I’m begging at this point (which I am ’cause I’m on my knees typing this… j/k), but I’m sure Ian would lose more faith in you if you don’t play that song.

Ian, High Priest of the Church of Ianism, represents the status quo of your fanbase. He’s loved you guys since The Illusion of Safety and has attended every show you’ve played in Austin since. So have I, and this is our only request: Please play To Awake and Avenge the Dead at the Austin show. I know you guys listen to your fans ’cause you guys aren’t some artificial formation cooked up in a major label’s lab.

OK… enough of that. I think those are the main highlights of April. Well, today is technically April Fool’s Day. I’m sure my workmates, who can be very dimwitted at times, are going to want to play an office prank or two on me or each other at work later today. They actually tried to pull the ol’ “keep the optical mouse from functioning correctly” prank, and I debunked that sucker in less than two seconds. WEAK!

Lesser highlights this month will include my two visits to Pluckers, one of which is tomorrow. Their food is delicious, and with Tuesday being fifty-cent wing night and two-dollar Shiners, my experience is improved that much more. K$ is claiming to get on the Wall of Flame eventually and had mentioned that he was going to conquer some Fire in the Hole wings tomorrow. I’m not sure if he remembered, but we’ll see.

This is the kick-off post for the April Post Challenge. Wish me luck. Peace out.

the tangible

Not too much is going on lately. Time just keeps ticking away.

My copy of X-Force #1 with the variant cover came in. I won it off eBay, and it made a journey all the way from Canada. I think I’ve gotten my variant cover fix for the time being, since I’ve managed to score this one and the Cable #1 variant.

I completed my copies of Aeon Flux: The Complete Animated Collection today. The discs arrived in the mail. I had a copy of the second disc for the longest time but never got around to getting the other two. I am very much a fan of that ’90s cartoon.

I fixed the visual mode in WP last night. I am very content. I learned the importance of deactivating all of the plugins before installing WP. Now I can resume the comfort of writing these posts with the visual editor versus the HTML editor. I use both, but I use the visual editor much more. I know the blog elitists don’t use it as much, but I really enjoy the comfort. For example, Ctrl+B turns things bold. Instead of having to code in the or highlighting the text and hitting the bold-formatting icon, I can hit Ctrl+B. Shortcuts are shortcuts for a reason.

Dammit. OK, I just saved, and all the formatting was lost. What a headache. Oh well… I thought I had it fixed but I guess not. I hope when the official release of 2.5 is out that this problem will go away.

So back to life. Life is good. Work is work. Mare and I will be enjoying a pork tenderloin seasoned with a roasted garlic & herb mix and brushed with organic barbecue sauce. We had the same thing last week, and it was so good that we consumed the whole thing. On the side will be some yummy mashed potatoes.

One of the main components at work wasn’t functioning correctly which definitely affected my efficiency. I really don’t like the feeling when something’s not working right (like the visual editor in WP), and it keeps me from doing my job as quickly as possible. Seriously though, it’s 2008. Most of the industries in the country are driven by computers these days.

This rant’s over. I’ve gotta get dinner going. I know it’s late, but Mare picked up a shift at work is won’t be back ’til almost eleven. It’s cool though. Peace out.
